Giovanni Bottesini (1821-1899) was an Italian composer, conductor, and double bass virtuoso. He was remarkably successful in all three activities, being nicknamed the Paganini of the double bass for his skills at playing this instrument. As a conductor he devoted himself to opera, traveling all around the world. He performed in New York, Cairo, London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Havana, and Mexico, among other cities. He’s catalog includes ten operas, three sacred works, several orchestral and chamber pieces, many works for solo double bass and a theoretical method for the instrument. In our days he´s mainly recognized for his contribution to the technique and the repertoire of the double bass.
